On 7 November 2023, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued the Master Direction on Information Technology Governance, Risk, Controls and Assurance Practices (the Master Direction). It encompasses certain key provisions w.r.t.:

  • IT governance – IT governance framework, role of Board of Directors, IT strategy committee, etc.
  • IT infrastructure and services management – Data migration controls, audit trails, controls on teleworking, etc.
  • IT and information security risk management – Risk assessment, periodic review of IT related risks, cyber incident response and recovery management, etc.
  • Business continuity and disaster recovery management
  • Information Systems (IS) audit.

Effective date: The Master Direction would come into effect from 1 April 2024
